Most importantly, it presents Sontheimer not as a mystery or an icon but as a man who completely merged with what he studied and came back to explain it to the world.“

Henning Stegmüller, geboren 1951 in München, absolvierte das Studium der Fotografie an der Staatlichen Fotoschule München sowie anschließend das Studium Film an der Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film in München. Seit 1977 wirkte er als Kameramann, Regisseur, Cutter, Produzent bei mehr als 30 Dokumentarfilmen (hier meist in Personalunion aller Funktionen) sowie Fernsehspielen und Spielfilmen mit.

Henning Stegmüller wurde bekannt durch seine ethnographischen Filme zu Indien, Afrika und Lateinamerika. Seit 1996 widmet er sich hauptsächlich der Fotografie. Sein Text- und Bildband Bombay – Mumbai, Bilder einer Mega-Stadt (A1-Verlag, München) erhielt 1999 den Goethe Verlagspreis. 2006 erscheint der Bildband Jachenau in der Edition Braus, Heidelberg
